15 Years in the Making, the Compound at Kent, CT
15 years ago was another beautiful and snowy day in the Hudson River Valley, where SPAN designed this single family home to take advantage of expansive mountain views.
Fast forward to last month, when we were able to visit our most recent project on the site, a studio overlooking the pond, wrapped in warm cedar and referencing the form of the original building.

We had the chance earlier this year to go see Martin Puryear’s permanent installation Lookout at the Storm King Art Center. It embeds a constellation of viewpoints which focus to a single in a brick structure of enigmatic form. The centeredness of perspective is reinforced, questioning whether you are the viewer or the object.
Collaboration with J.M. Bonet-Vitralls Studio
It’s an honor to create an artwork with J.M. Bonet-Vitralls, artisans for the Sagrada Familia, to learn about their process for making stained glass artwork. While architects may be predisposed to finding artistry in the process, there is something especially entrancing in the use and representation of light and texture, the subtleties of the hand seen in the handmade.

Set within a saddle of the landscape, the newly built main residence comprises several volumes including the master bedroom that juts out into the trees and a concealed ocean-level living area. “The house unfolds along the landscape in the same way that several small bridges through the property take people on a journey,” founding principal Karen Stonely says. “Nature gave us the most wonderful tools—it was just a question of how to lace it throughout our designs.”
