Our Story

SPAN Architecture LLC is an international, award winning, architecture and design studio with a multi-faceted and collaborative approach. The studio creates age-less work that is responsive and inventive, producing a critique from collective inspirations towards an individual sense of place and personality in each project. Our works, as well as our clients, are aspirational. We take a journey that ends up in a place that is both brave, having taken risks, and evolutionary rather than revolutionary. We consider the history of a place as much as its future.

Founding Partners Karen Stonely AIA LEED AP and Peter Pelsinski AIA LEED AP, lead the studio with an array of experiences as practitioners, teachers, artists and theorists. The studio’s work encompasses an unusually broad range of project types, from residential to commercial, development to high-end retail, custom objects including furniture, hardware, lighting and art, graphic design and branding.

Each project is undertaken collaboratively in a dialogue between the client, the studio, craftsmen and artisans. SPAN’s approach enables the studio to seamlessly blend between and integrate the diverse expertise of these experiences. Their wide range of building types allows them to experiment at a small, highly detailed level, and to extrapolate the results of those projects to larger, multi-unit works. Where SPAN excels is shown in the intricate details and deceptively simple forms that give a project its defining core. Each project conjures a simultaneous experience of built and natural environments. SPAN’s work, be it ground up or interiors, is a fast-paced laboratory in which to explore new building techniques and construction details.

SPAN continues to be prolifically awarded and published, with awards including Ar-chitecture MasterPrize, American Institute of Architecture New York City, American Institute of Architecture New York State, FX International Interior Design Awards, BOY (Interior Design Best of Year), Dwell 15 Years of the Best 15 Modern Homes, and Architizer A+. SPAN has graced the covers of Architectural Digest, Interior Design, Interiors and

Aspire and is included in many books ranging from New York Architecture, urbanism in Envisioning Hudson Square to the international publication, Architecture Houses: Now. The studio has a custom rug line, Through The Lens, and is launching a custom furniture / object / art line. Coupled with their business endeavors, each year the studio continues to pursue and encourage both philanthropic and mentorship opportunities.
